The gear list
20 practical items for the Andes, the Amazon and the coast. Each one links to its AliExpress listing so you can check sizes, options and delivery to your country.
Cusco (3,400 m), the Sacred Valley and Lake Titicaca swing from warm sun to near-freezing nights. Layers beat one bulky coat.
Cusco and Machu Picchu mornings can drop close to 0 °C (especially Jun–Aug); it's light enough to stuff in your daypack once the sun comes out.
Same idea for women: warm on cold Andean mornings and Titicaca boat rides, light enough to carry all day.
Lodges in Puno, Colca and on treks are often unheated; a base layer is the lightest way to sleep warm.
Merino stays warm when damp and resists odour on multi-day treks like Salkantay, Lares or the Inca Trail.
Rainy season runs roughly Nov–Mar; the high-altitude sun is strong all year, even when it's cloudy.
Afternoon showers are almost daily at Machu Picchu and on the trails in rainy season; the poncho covers your daypack too.
Above 3,000 m the UV is intense even on cloudy days; the chin strap keeps it on in Andean wind.
Sun, dust and cold wind at Rainbow Mountain, Colca Canyon and on Titicaca boats; doubles as a light face cover.
Cuts high-altitude glare off Lake Titicaca, the Maras salt pans and snowy passes; UV400 blocks UVA and UVB.
Machu Picchu only allows small bags inside, and the trains to Aguas Calientes have tight luggage limits.
Machu Picchu only lets small backpacks in (about 40×35×20 cm); folds into its own pocket for the flight.
Leave your big bag in Cusco and pack light for Aguas Calientes: the Machu Picchu trains allow about 5 kg of hand luggage.
Keeps phones and cameras dry on Amazon boat transfers (Puerto Maldonado, Iquitos), Titicaca boats and rainy hikes.
For the Aguas Calientes hot springs, Amazon lodges and hostels; dries overnight even in jungle humidity.
Tap water isn't drinkable in Peru, and many tours start before sunrise.
Peru's tap water isn't safe to drink; a filter lets you refill on treks and skip plastic bottles (it filters, it doesn't purify viruses).
Squeeze-and-drink refills at lodges and trailheads; rolls flat in your bag when empty.
Inca stairs on the Inca Trail and Salkantay are steep and uneven. Note: inside the Machu Picchu citadel, poles are restricted (rubber tips, mainly older or mobility-limited visitors).
Machu Picchu bus queues, Rainbow Mountain and Inca Trail camp mornings all start in the dark; recharges by USB.
Peru uses Type A (flat-pin, US-style) and Type C (round-pin, European) outlets at 220 V.
Long days of photos and offline maps drain phones. 20,000 mAh ≈ 74 Wh, under the 100 Wh airline limit; always carry it in hand luggage.
Covers Peru's Type A and Type C sockets plus UK/AU for the trip home. It's an adapter, not a voltage converter: check your devices say 100–240 V.
Keep your passport and spare cards out of sight in busy markets, terminals and city centres.
Pickpocketing happens in busy spots like central Lima, Cusco's markets and bus terminals; keep passport and backup cards under your clothes.
Clips inside your waistband for emergency cash and a spare card, separate from your everyday wallet.
